Phil Goodwin: What ‘community’ means to me…

Updated: Feb 2

‘Our guiding philosophy has always been to create a community that facilitates connection between people, empowering them to be the best versions of themselves’

In the realm of yoga and Pilates, the concept of 'community' holds a profound significance, one that transcends mere words. Phil Goodwin, our guiding light, beautifully articulates the essence of community as a force that fosters connection, empowerment, and the journey towards becoming the best versions of ourselves.

A community, in its truest sense, is a haven of shared connection. Be it a local neighbourhood, a surf club, or the sacred space of a Yoga and Pilates studio, it is a place where individuals gather, intertwine, learn, support, and celebrate one another. This sacred space becomes a home, a sanctuary we can turn to whenever needed.

For students immersed in the practice of Yoga and Pilates, the studio serves as a beacon of accountability, bringing intentions to life. Within the class, a common thread unites us all. Laughter, tears, and movement weave together seamlessly, creating an environment where personal growth thrives, guided by the principle of 'Svadhyaya'—the study of the highest self.

The role of a teacher in this sacred space is pivotal. Teachers serve as physical and spiritual guides, accompanying students on their transformative journeys. Over time, the teacher/student relationship evolves into something deeper, more intimate, and enduring. The studio, for teachers, becomes the platform where their training, creativity, focus, and connection converge. A connected teacher possesses the ability to lead a class through a unique and personal experience, leaving an indelible mark on the collective journey.

Community, at its core, is a choice. Deep within, the yearning for a sense of belonging is universal. The places and spaces we choose to invest our time, whether offline or online, are fueled by the energy of the community or individuals within it. Feeling involved and connected to something that resonates with our essence is vital; it reminds us that we are not alone in this vast world.

Connection is the heartbeat of community. Dare to reach out, extend a hand, and connect with someone within your studio. More often than not, you will encounter a heartwarming response, a testament to the power of shared energy and the beautiful tapestry of relationships woven within the sacred space of a Yoga and Pilates community.
